What Are the Types of Stainless Steel?

Stainless Steel comes in five main types. Ferritic stainless steels are generally the least expensive, but don't have as broad an application. Martensitic stainless steels can be hardened by quenching and tempering and are used mainly in cutlery, general engineering, and aerospace. When hardened, they can become brittle, and so are not hardened all the way or are not used in general construction.

Austenitic stainless steels are the most widely used; they are the most corrosion-resistant. Duplex stainless steels are a mixture of ferritic and austenitic to enhance strength and corrosion-resistance. The final type is precipitation hardening stainless steels. They, too, can be strengthened by heat treatment.
